You get an extra second today!

Every few years, a phenomenon known as a leap second occurs.  Today, the Earth gets an entire second added to our universal time standard.  This occurs because the speed and rotation of Earth varies ever so slightly when compared with the atomic clock each day, and thus, once every few years, we need to add a whole second to our time!  What will you do with your extra second?

It’s Public Service Day!

The U.N. declared June 23rd Public Service Day, to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to every community.  No public service is too small, so get involved!  Teach your kids about helping others and the community.  It can be something as simple as picking up litter, going to volunteer at a senior home, help serve food at a shelter, or more!  Here are some great ideas from parents.com:

Make delicious and healthy fruit popsicles!

It’s hot.  Instead of grabbing the ice cream or the sugar-y pops for your kids, how about a guilt-free refresher the whole family will love. 

These better-for-you popsicles are made with fresh fruit and way less sugar (not that the kiddos will notice).  Bonus: Each recipe is only 4 ingredients or less!
